Occupational disorders in dental practice: An integrative review of risk factors

Abstract

Introduction: Occupational diseases pose significant challenges for professionals, affecting quality of life and productivity. Among these diseases, Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders (WMSDs) and Repetitive Strain Injuries (RSIs) are particularly common among dental surgeons due to improper posture.

Objective: To determine the prevalence of musculoskeletal diseases among dental surgeons and identify the main factors influencing their occurrence.

Methods:  This integrative review, conducted from June to October 2023, with articles from the last 10 years were reviewed in the PubMed, Scopus, BBO, and Web of Science databases using specific descriptors. Eligibility criteria included observational studies with a minimum sample size of 50 participants, published in peer-reviewed journals in Portuguese or English. Data collection followed the URSI instrument (2005), and the analysis was descriptive.

Results: Recent studies highlight the high incidence of musculoskeletal pain among dental surgeons, reinforcing the need for ergonomic interventions and preventive practices starting in academic training.

Conclusion: The relationship between musculoskeletal disorders and quality of life indicates specific risks for dental surgeons, supporting the implementation of preventive approaches
