Workplace harassment of nursing staff in Bogota

Abstract

Introduction: The nursing staff is exposed to various stressors, such as patient care, coordination, and relationships with other health professionals, added to a high workload and, sometimes developing their activities in unfavorable work environments that can affect their performance and cause health problems. Likewise, it has been described that these workers are subjected to situations of workplace harassment, which can have serious effects on organizations and on the health of those who suffer from it.

Objective: To identify workplace harassment practices in nursing personnel in the city of Bogotá.

Methods: a descriptive cross-sectional study carried out in the city of Bogotá, through an instrument to measure workplace bullying, which consists of 44 items that assess seven dimensions: no-professional isolation; professional degradation; professional rejection and violation of privacy; professional discredit and personal humiliation and rejection, using a five-item Likert scale.

Results: This study found that 85% of the participants stated that they had been the victim of some form of harassment at work. The most frequent forms reported were professional discredit, professional degradation, professional isolation, humiliation, and finally professional rejection and violation of privacy.

Conclusions: Workplace harassment against nursing staff is a reality that was evidenced in this research work. It is imperative to establish strategies to try to eliminate or reduce this phenomenon that negatively impacts health workers and the institutions where they work
