Occupational and sociodemographic characteristics of workers with occupational respiratory illness due to exposure to chemical substances

Abstract

Introduction: Occupational respiratory diseases due to risk factors in the work environment represent considerable costs for workers, the family, the health system and society.

Objective: To determine the work and sociodemographic characteristics of workers diagnosed with respiratory disease due to chemical substances in the OOAD.

Methods: Descriptive study, in workers with respiratory diseases due to chemical substances, affiliated with the Mexican Social Security Institute, assigned to the Deconcentrated Administrative Operation Body of Baja California in the period 2015-2021. The variables studied were: occupational respiratory diseases diagnosed by chemical substances and occupational and sociodemographic characteristics, included in the “Notice of medical care and qualification of probable occupational disease ST9” format. Descriptive statistics were used using the SPSSv24 statistical program.

Results: The population was 58 patients, the predominant data were: female sex (63.8%), range of 21-30 years, denied smoking (74.1%), unspecified chemical agents (19%) and tinner. (13.8%), industrial machinery operators, assemblers, drivers and transport drivers (50%), the manufacturing business line (34.5%), seniority in the job 2-11 months (44. 8%) and less than 7 days of disability granted (88%).

Conclusions: Workers are exposed to respiratory diseases triggered by chemical substances that lead to requiring disability
