Abstract

Introduction: Cardiovascular diseases are the first cause of mortality in our country. The Gaziano tables are one of the methods established to evaluate the risk of suffering from them. Objectives: To evaluate the global cardiovascular risk in a group of workers of the National Institute for Workers’ Health (INSAT) of Havana in 2017 using Gaziano tables. Material and method: A cross-sectional descriptive study design was employed. Data were collected from the clinical histories of 83 workers of INSAT, with age between 35 and 74 years, without previous history of cardiovascular disease and who attended the periodic check-up in 2017. Age, sex, body mass index, systolic blood pressure and smoking were the variables taking care to classify global cardiovascular risk according to the Gaziano tables. Percentages and correlation indexes were calculated at 95 %. Results: High global cardiovascular risk was 19.3% (37.7% for men and 10.7% for women). 50% of this group is between 65 and 74 years and 22.2% between 55 to 64 years. The 51.8% of the sample is overweight, 36.1% suffer from hypertension and 30.1% of the individuals are smokers. A statistically significant relationship between age andsystolic blood pressure in females was found (r = 0.46, p = 0.001). Conclusions: The increase in age and male sex are factors of global cardiovascular risk to be borne in mind. In females, the systolic blood pressure increases with age.
