Lower back pain in administrative and operational workers in the Colombian Caribbean

Abstract

Introduction: Low back pain affects the health and productivity of workers in various companies in the Colombian Caribbean region. This study analyzes its prevalence and risk factors in 490 workers, highlighting the importance of preventive active breaks.

Objective: To analyze the prevalence of low back pain and its association with ergonomic and sociodemographic risk factors in administrative and operational workers in companies in the Colombian Caribbean.

Methods: This was an empirical, descriptive, correlational, cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach. It was based on the statistical analysis of numerical data collected using a structured instrument. After data cleaning, 490 subjects were included (mean age 34.2 ± 14.1 years, 52% men, 48% women). The internal consistency of seven dichotomous items regarding workplace accidents, illnesses, absenteeism, low back pain, and active breaks was assessed using Cronbach's alpha equivalent for binary data, complemented by the Kuder-Richardson 20 (KR-20). For inferential statistics, the chi-square test was used to analyze associations with gender, age, socioeconomic status, education level, and seniority. Internal consistency was acceptable (α=0.71).

Results: 48% reported low back pain during work activities, 18% were diagnosed with lumbago, and only 34% took active breaks. Back pain was significantly associated with lifting heavy loads (p<0.001), absenteeism due to pain (p<0.001) (OR=3.2; 95% CI: 1.9–5.4; p<0.001), and prolonged sedentary behavior (p=0.02).

Conclusion: Active breaks reduce the risk of a low back pain diagnosis by 42% (OR 0.58). Workplace ergonomics require priority intervention through active breaks and the prevention of musculoskeletal injuries such as low back pain.
