Abstract

Introduction: Radiation protection is essential for occupationally exposed workers (OEW). Knowledge of dose limits and risk perception are key indicators of safety culture.

Objective: To evaluate radiation safety culture in imaging personnel at “Dr. Agostinho Neto” Hospital, Guantánamo, Cuba, considering their knowledge, practices, and risk perception.

Methods: Observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study using an anonymous self-administered survey of 70 OEW (census sampling). Sociodemographic variables, theoretical knowledge, self-protection practices, and institutional perception were explored. Descriptive analysis, contingency tables, and categorization of qualitative suggestions were performed.

Results: Female sex predominated (61.4 %), and mean age was 44.8 years. Only 4.3 % correctly identified the occupational dose limit (20 mSv/year); 22.9 % confused it with the public limit (1 mSv/year). 54.3 % had not received formal training in the last two years. An association was found between greater work experience (> 15 years) and poorer knowledge of dose limits (p < 0.05). 75.7 % reported insufficient personal protective equipment, and 71.4 % considered maintenance inadequate. Only 14.3 % perceived that the hospital prioritizes radiation safety.

Conclusions: There is a critical deficit in knowledge of occupational dose limits and a widespread perception of institutional neglect. Radiation safety culture is compromised by training and structural deficiencies that require urgent educational interventions and improvements in institutional management.
