Abstract

Introduction. Cerebrovascular disease (CVD) is a worldwide public health issue according to the World Health Organization (WHO). According to Mexico’s Secretariat of Health there has been an increase in CVD cases affecting individuals younger than 65 years old. In Baja California, Mexico, it is the fifth leading cause of workplace disability in the active working population.

Objective. To determine how many potential productive life years lost are related to cerebrovascular disease among disabled individuals in the Mexican Institute of Social Security in Baja California, Mexico.

Material and Methods.Descriptive and retrospective study. Authorized by the Local Investigation Committee information was obtained from the Delegation of the Mexican Institute of Social Security from the patientsreferred as disabled secondary to Cerebrovascular disease in the year of 2015. Potential productive life years lostwere calculated with the accumulated potential productive life years lost indicator. It was analyzed using descriptive statistics with the statistics program SPSS version 21.

Results.Thecalculated potential productive lost years were 605.03, 90.3% in men and 9.7% in women, mainly in the age group of 51 to 60 years old. The most frequent occupations were cleaning, security guards, construction, and truck drivers (6.94%, 6.94%, 6.94%, and 5.55% respectively). Each worker lost an average of 8.4 potential productive life years because of this pathology.

Conclusions. CVD represents a public health issue that leads to a definitive decrease in productive life years. It is necessary for individuals to engage in a rehabilitation program to allow future work reintegration.
