Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is one of the most prevalent chronic-degenerative diseases in Mexico. During its course, developing complications constitute an important cause of prolonged hospitalization rates, work disability and loss of productive working years.

Objective: To determine the main complications of Diabetes Mellitus as a cause of work disability.

Material and Methods: A descriptive, observational, cross sectional and retrospective study, where we examined occupational disability case files caused by DM and its complications during the year 2016 in Mexicali, Baja California (B.C) of ascribed patients to the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS). Those who met inclusion criteria were selected. Descriptive statistics, including central tendency measures, percentages and frequencies were used with the SPSSv21 program.

Results: Ophtalmological, renal, and peripheric circulatory complications were the most common, being present in  42.8%, 31.7% and 17.4% of cases, respectively. Majority of patients were male (77.8%). The mean age in which patients acquired disability status was 50 years; on average, 8.75  accumulated potential productive years were lost per worker.

Conclusions: DM is currently a public health problem, which mainly affects working age patients. Being that, ophtalomlogical and renal complications are the primary causes for disability, it is necessary to create effective strategies for prevention and timely diagnosis in order to stop disease progression.
