Perceptions of university administrative staff on active breaks in the workplace

Abstract

Introduction: In the current work context, characterized by long sedentary workdays, in these circumstances active breaks have become a key strategy to improve workers' well-being and enhance their performance. These breaks consist of brief exercises that aim to reduce fatigue, improve concentration, and prevent musculoskeletal disorders, especially in sedentary work environments. However, the effectiveness of these practices largely depends on the workers' own perception of their usefulness and benefits.

Objective: To describe the perception of administrative workers about active breaks at the University Institution. 

Methods: A qualitative, descriptive study was developed, based on structured interviews with six administrative workers belonging to one of the faculties of the institution that meet certain labor and participation criteria. Sociodemographic and labor data were collected, as well as opinions and attitudes towards active breaks, and through thematic analysis, recurring patterns were identified that allowed understanding the participants' perceptions.

Results: The administrative workers of University Institution perceive active breaks as a beneficial strategy for their physical, mental, and work well-being. However, their implementation is limited by factors such as workload, lack of time, and the absence of clear institutional policies.

Conclusion: Active breaks are perceived as a useful tool by administrative staff to improve their well-being, and although there are barriers such as workload and lack of clear policies, workers show willingness to integrate them if adequate structure and institutional support are provided.
